Plant your nuclear-armed submarines near Cuba and you could get some nosy overflights from American fighters. Move your fleet near enemy waters and they might do the same to you. This war of maneuver is reminiscent of Soviet and U.S. Rather, both players engage in feints and countermoves while the DEFCON clock ticks down to 4, 3, 2, and 1. The game begins at DEFCON 5 and the opposing armies can’t engage. This is accomplished by saturating enemy cities with nuclear warheads while protecting your own. The player begins with some basic military units such as radar, missile silos, nuclear submarines, aircraft and battleships, and a simple objective: maximize enemy losses while minimizing your own. In real life, the highest level of DEFCON ever observed was DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. At DEFCON 5, peacetime conditions are observed. ![]() military indicator that signals how prepared the armed forces should be for nuclear war. The increase in hostilities is denoted by the “Defense Readiness Condition” or DEFCON counter. The player takes the role of a superpower coordinating global military maneuvers that escalate slowly from peacetime levels to all-out nuclear war. The structure of the game is relatively simple. The video game DEFCON, subtitled “Everybody Dies”, explores this chilling possibility. What if the Cuban Missile Crisis hadn’t been a wet firecracker? What if the Cold War had turned decidedly hot?
